History

Narnia Elementary School was established in 2006. It is founded by the Brethren Church in Banská Bystrica, and it is the third school opened by the Brethren Church (CZŠ Narnia in Bratislava, Bilingválne gymnázium of C. S. Lewis, ZŠ Narnia in Banská Bystrica). The school loosely follows the ideology of Bratislava’s Narnia School. We are a church school, open to all pupils with an emphasis on church affiliation.
Narnia Elementary School has developed its own educational system, unique in both content and teaching methodology.  We offer integrated thematic education and extensive English language training. Our intention is to reach out and accept those students whose parents prefer education and training based on Christian values. Because of the focus on language at Narnia, priority is also given to students who perform well on the short-term memory test in addition to the maturity test.

Since the 2006/07 academic year, we have opened one class of first grade with a capacity of 18 to 24 pupils every year and will continue to do so until the completion of the elementary school in the 2014/2015 school year.

The Origin of the name “Narnia”

The name “Narnia“ is borrowed both from the eponymous elementary school in Bratislava and from the author C. S. Lewis, an Oxford professor, writer, and philosopher.

C. S. Lewis described in the ”The Chronicles of Narnia” series, a story of a mysterious and interesting country: Narnia.  In Narnia, various children repeatedly experience unusual and exciting adventures.   The children have different personalities and abilities; they are full of fear and have a desire for courage, but at the same time, the children are full of love towards each other while still being able to feel anger.   The children overcome their limits and finally win with the help of Aslan, the king of Narnia.   Their victory, however, is not only a victory over the enemy; the children’s biggest victories are won in their own souls.

The first book of the series is a story of four children who find the door to an unusual world in an ordinary wardrobe. The last book bids us farewell with words of wisdom: The further up and the further in you go, the bigger everything gets.  The inside is larger than the outside.

Therefore our school’s name is Narnia. We hope for another door beyond our school’s door – a mysterious one, so that the children may enter the exciting journey of learning, reaching “still higher and still deeper inside”.
